An American Anatomy

With my deepest apologies to John Donne.

We seem ambitious, God's whole work t'undo;
of nothing he made us, and we strive too,
to bring our selves to nothing back, and we
do what we can to work so quick as he.
With new diseases on our selves we war,
and with new physic, a worse engine far.
And new philosophy calls all in doubt,
the grand old party is quite put out.
Out of depression we shall spend ourselves;
and tax carbon, lest our air boil like hell's.
We'll hug the queen, and insult the PM;
folk's favor and congress support our whim.
What terrors would we find if we see,
in our leaders' thoughts' anatomy?
